Akiyoshi-do Vertical Project, 2024
"Undertowashhollow equipped our entire eight-person team. Every item performed beyond specification in zero-visibility flood conditions."
The Akiyoshi-do Vertical Project explored a newly mapped 240-meter shaft system in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The Undertowashhollow team worked with expedition lead Hiroshi Nakamura for three months prior, reviewing anchor points, rope lengths, and emergency protocols specific to the cave's hydrology.

What Cavers Say
The advice I got at Undertowashhollow saved me from buying the wrong harness for a canyon system I had planned in Okinawa. Staff knew exactly what I needed.
I've purchased from overseas suppliers for years. Undertowashhollow's prices are competitive and the in-store fitting service is genuinely invaluable — something no website offers.
We outfitted a 12-person student field course entirely through Undertowashhollow. The bulk consultation service and gear-return inspection were both exceptional.
Common Questions
Caving gear questions answered by active cavers. If you don't see your question, contact us directly.
Not at all. We serve everyone from first-time cave visitors on guided tours to seasoned technical cavers rigging multi-day expeditions. Our staff will gauge your experience and recommend the appropriate entry-level or advanced kit.
All personal protective equipment (PPE) we stock is certified to relevant European (CE/EN) and UIAA standards. We clearly display the applicable certification on every product page and in-store tag. We do not stock uncertified safety items under any circumstances.
Unused, unaltered items may be returned within 30 days with proof of purchase. Safety gear that has been loaded, deployed, or shows signs of use cannot be returned — this is a safety regulation, not a store policy. Please consult us before purchasing if you are unsure of sizing.
Yes, we ship to most countries via Japan Post EMS and DHL Express. Certain rope lengths and chemical items may be subject to export restrictions. Please contact us for a shipping quote on large or multi-item orders.
We offer a limited helmet and headlamp rental programme for customers attending our monthly guided introduction sessions. Full equipment rental is not available — for independent caving, ownership of properly fitted personal gear is strongly recommended for safety.
From the Depths
Understanding the difference between natural rock anchors and drilled bolt placements is the foundation of safe single-rope technique in any cave system.
We tested six leading caving headlamps across twelve hours of continuous use in a cold, wet cave environment. Here are the results.
Kochi Prefecture's Ryugado offers a rare combination of accessible tourist passages and genuinely challenging technical sections for experienced cavers.
